What is Ecstasy (XTC)? Ecstasy (also known as E) is now one of the most widely used synthetic drugs. Over the last decade the drug has become hugely popular with club-going segments of the gay community. MDMA stands for 3, 4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine. The drug is closely related to the hallucinogen mescaline and the stimulant amphetamine, and is synthetically manufactured. "Pure" Ecstasy is uncommon. Batches frequently contain heroin, LSD, amphetamines and other assorted toxic impurities which are used as fillers.
What are the effects of ecstasy?Ecstasy forces the release of serotonin in the brain giving users a feeling of euphoria. The drug lowers inhibitions, increases mood sensitivity and gives club-goers energy to dance without being fatigued. Is ecstasy addictive?Ecstasy is not physically addictive. However, the drug can often take on great importance in people's lives, and some people become rather compulsive in their use. What are the risks behind ecstasy? Some people experience depression after taking ecstasy. This is caused by ecstasy’s effect on certain chemicals in the brain. Deaths are also commonly associated with ecstasy use - usually from heatstrokes from dancing for long periods of time in hot clubs without naturally tiring out and replenishing lost body fluids. Much of what is sold as "ecstasy" on the black market actually contains other drugs that can be more dangerous than ecstasy (like speed and PCP). Mixing ecstasy with alcohol or other drugs increases the risk of adverse reactions. Additionally, Ecstasy is illegal and a conviction for possession can carry long prison sentences.
